Having a show

I would like to have a show this summer to exhibit and sell my work. The inventory will consist of my paintings and my art tables. However, with no formal training or education, I find myself outside of the "art community" in my city. I don't know any gallery people. Could I just rent my own space, advertise and invite everyone I know to my show? I would really appreciate feedback on this.
